Children's Privacy Notice

BestStep Tutoring provides one-on-one tutoring for students from kindergarten through college sophomore. We take children's privacy seriously and follow the Children's Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA). This notice explains how we handle information about children under 13. Our full Privacy Policy covers everything else.

Our approach

• Our website is for parents, guardians and adult students. We don't collect personal information directly from children under 13 through our website.
• For every student under 18, a parent or guardian completes our forms.
• We collect only what we need to match and schedule tutoring.
• We never sell children's information, use it for advertising, or track or profile students.

What we collect about children, and why

From the parent or guardian, through our matching form: the child's first name, grade, the subjects and challenges the parent describes, goals, learning style and session preferences. We use this only to match the child with a tutor and plan sessions.

During online sessions: with a parent's consent, Zoom sessions are recorded, which captures the child's image and voice. We keep recordings only for the child's safety, view them only if a safety concern comes up, and delete them after 30 days.

Who sees it

The tutor matched to the child, and BestStep staff who coordinate tutoring. Our service providers, Netlify (website hosting and form submissions) and Zoom (online sessions), process information only to provide their services to us. We disclose information when required by law or to protect a child's safety.

How long we keep it

We follow common industry practice and the COPPA Rule: we keep a child's information only as long as we need it for the purpose we collected it, then securely delete it. We never keep children's information indefinitely.

• Zoom recordings: kept for the child's safety, so we can review a session if a concern comes up, and deleted after 30 days.
• Information from a match request that doesn't lead to tutoring: deleted 1 year after the request.
• The child's first name, grade, subjects, goals, learning style and session preferences: kept while the family works with us, so we can plan and schedule sessions. Deleted 1 year after the family's last session, so a returning family doesn't have to start over. If unused package sessions remain (packages last up to 3 years), it's deleted 1 year after the package expires.

A parent or guardian can ask us to delete their child's information sooner at any time.

Parents' rights

At any time, a parent or guardian can:

• Review the information we have about their child
• Ask us to correct or delete it
• Refuse further collection or use of it, or withdraw consent, including for session recording
